Maize is a C4 annual crop, which means that it has high light-use efficiency.

 

The crop does well in any soil with adequate drainage, ensuring aerobic conditions. Soils must also have an adequate water-holding capacity, to provide adequate moisture throughout the growing season. Maize prefers soil with a pH of between 6.0 and 7.2. This crop requires large quantities of nitrogen,
phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese.
