Blackcurrant requires high application rates of calcium and iron. This soft fruit can be grown successfully on a wide range of soil types, which provide good drainage, and where soil fertility is adjusted and maintained. They prefer damp, but not waterlogged ground. Soil should be slightly acidic with a pH range of 5.8–6.7. The soil should have a rich supply of organic matter to promote good drainage, aeration and moisture retention. Blackcurrant is highly sensitive to late spring frosts.
