Ongoing trials testing the benefits of rhizobacteria biostimulant products – Cilus Plus on cauliflower and Rise-P on Purple Sprouting Broccoli (PSB) - have already shown a visible increase in plant size and strength. The initial results were showcased to visitors at the Elsom Seeds vegetable open day by representatives of ICL distributor, Dejex.

Jason Steels, from Dejex, explained that the rhiozbacteria products contain the same bacterial colony (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), but are formulated for different situations. “Cilus Plus was used for plant propagation, while Rise-P was applied shortly after planting to enhance field production.”

“The naturally occurring soil-dwelling bacteria in these products increases the bioavailability of phosphate which is responsible for root development.

“This leads to an increase in the density and length of roots and root hairs, meaning more soil can be explored for vital living space. This deprives pathogenic organisms of water and nutrients required for establishment, overall leading to a stronger and healthier plant, with better anchoring and self-defence,” said Jason.

“Although the cauliflower and PSB trials haven’t reached full maturity yet, it’s clear that the treated crop is significantly bigger and stronger than the control plot, with greater yields almost certain. The full results of the trial will be available in the New Year.”

Jason went on to explain that he expects biostimulants to become a useful addition to the grower’s toolbox, due to the increasing focus on maximising soil health.

“There’s an increasing number of restrictions being placed on chemicals, and pressure on growers to reduce pesticide usage to meet environmental targets, and products such as Cilus Plus and Rise P can play a big part in this, and can also be used in organic production.”
