General Pot Plants
Pot and Patio plants are usually potted into pots from 9 -13cm pots. Typically plants include Pelargoniums and Begonias. Often growers can face challenges managing growth under protection and maintaining compact growth and flowering.
Poinsettias
Usually potted into 9cm pots (Range 6-10cm) for Mini’s which are generally used in planted bowls and novelty pots, 13cm pots (Range 10-17cm) for the Midi’s / Large for use as specimen house plants.
The challenges of this crop are well known. It is a long crop cycle and the plants need to be closely monitored. Key challenges are the continual supply of calcium to the crop to avoid browning of the leaf edges.
Cyclamen
Usually potted into 9cm pots (Range 6-10cm) for Mini’s which are generally used in tubs and garden planting, and 13cm pots (Range 10-17cm) for the Midi’s / Large for use as house plants.
Potted in batches, the early crops face coping with summer heat and growth under protection needs to be managed to maintaining compact growth and flowering, to minimise risk of Botrytis fungal attack of soft growth. Later potted crops face cooler nights, so irrigation needs to be minimized to keep humidity low to reduce risk of fungal attack. For Mini crops being marketed in the late autumn hardiness is increasingly important and keeping the plants growing healthily in these conditions is a challenge.

Nurture
While Poinsettia are traditionally grown with purely water soluble fertilizers, many growers now appreciate the efficiency and ease of using Osmocote 5 for the core nutrition combined with supplementary water soluble feeding. Watering can be kept to a minimum as Osmocote Exact High K is steadily releasing nutrients., whereas as feeding with WSF would require giving extra water just to feed , even on cool days when the botrytis risk is highest.
