Avocados on higher ground at Baynesfield Estate

Due to the nature of the terrain, the plantings in this new 30 ha avocado orchard at Baynesfield Estate in South Africa can only take place on the higher ground, as light frost in the low-lying areas pose a problem during the winter months.

The major issue with planting on the higher ground is wind damage to the young trees. The farmer covers the newly planted trees with a blue plastic banana bag which creates a micro-climate for the young trees and limits the wind damage.

The application method is to blend 150g Agroblen 9-20-8+3MgO+0.1B into the backfill and plant the tree as per standard practice.
